The Arab Republic of Egypt welcomes the announcement made by U.S. President Donald Trump this evening regarding the agreement to suspend military operations in the region for two weeks.
Egypt considers this American step a significant positive development toward achieving the intended de-escalation, containing tensions, and preserving the security, stability, and resources of the peoples of the region and the entire world.
Egypt affirms that the suspension of military operations by the United States, along with the Iranian side’s responsiveness, represent a highly important opportunity that must be seized to create space for negotiations, diplomacy, and constructive dialogue—an approach that Egypt has consistently advocated—in order to resolve disputes through peaceful means and avoid resorting to force.
This would contribute to de-escalation, ending the war, achieving regional and international security and stability, and sparing the peoples of the region and the world further suffering.
Egypt emphasizes the importance of building on this step through full commitment to halting military operations and respecting the freedom of international navigation.
Egypt reaffirms its support for all initiatives aimed at achieving peace and security and affirms its continued intensive efforts with Pakistan and Turkey to work with regional and international partners to bolster security and stability in the region.
Egypt underscores the utmost importance of respecting the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the Gulf Cooperation Council states and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
Egypt further expresses categorical rejection of any attacks against them or infringement on their sovereignty—especially as their security and stability are closely linked to Egypt’s own.
Egypt asserts that any arrangements agreed upon in upcoming negotiations must take into account the legitimate security concerns of the Gulf states.
During a phone call that took place in the early hours of Wednesday, April 8, between Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdelatty and Mr. Steve Witkoff, the U.S. Special Envoy for the Middle East, Minister Abdelatty expressed deep appreciation for this important American step in giving diplomacy a chance and working toward initiating a serious negotiation process between the American and Iranian sides to resolve all outstanding issues in a way that achieves regional and international security and stability and ensures freedom of international navigation.
For his part, Mr. Steve Witkoff praised Egypt’s sincere efforts, alongside Pakistan and regional partners, to advance efforts toward reaching a ceasefire and launching a negotiation process.
