alhadath – cairo
Today, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi spoke by phone with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The Spokesman for the Presidency, Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy, stated that the Greek Prime Minister was keen to get an understanding of President El-Sisi’s view on regional developments, particularly the ongoing war between Iran and Israel. The call emphasized the need to halt the current escalation and stressed that a political solution through negotiations is the only viable path to ending the crisis, steering away from military options.
Both sides expressed deep concern that the continuation of military operations could drive the region into a new wave of instability, which would negatively impact all the peoples of the Middle East and threaten peace and security on both regional and international levels.
Both sides stressed that the current escalation between Iran and Israel should not distract attention from the ongoing humanitarian tragedy in the Gaza Strip. They affirmed the importance of ending the continuous aggression in the Strip and alleviating the suffering of civilians, given the restrictions imposed on the entry of humanitarian aid.
The call also addressed other important regional issues, including the demarcation of maritime borders in the Eastern Mediterranean, the issue of illegal migration from the south toward Greece, and developments in Libya. The two sides reaffirmed the importance of forming a new, unified Libyan government tasked with holding simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections, while supporting the efforts of the Libyan House of Representatives and the High Council of State to endorse an executable and consensual roadmap.
Both sides also affirmed their commitment to bolstering the momentum bilateral relations have gained and exploring broader prospects for cooperation in various fields, especially in the economic and energy sectors.
In this context, President El-Sisi reiterated Egypt’s commitment to protecting all religious sanctities on its land and expressed its particular appreciation for Saint Catherine’s Monastery and its religious and spiritual status. This was clearly reflected in a recent ruling issued by the competent Egyptian court. The President stressed that the monastery would not be interfered with and noted the importance of correcting erroneous information circulating in Europe in this regard.
