Today, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met with UN Secretary General, Mr. António Guterres, on the sidelines of the Africa–France Summit in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.
Spokesman for the Presidency Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy said President El-Sisi expressed Egypt’s appreciation for Mr. Guterres’ efforts and leadership of the United Nations apparatus over the past years, amidst highly complex international circumstances and multiple crises. The President commended the ongoing cooperation between Egypt and the UN with regard to regional conflicts and crises, as well as the productive developmental collaboration within the ‘United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework 2023–2027’ with Egypt, which supports the state’s efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
UN Secretary-General Guterres expressed his profound appreciation for the cooperation extended by Egypt since he assumed office. Mr. Guterres lauded President El-Sisi’s diplomatic efforts to enhance security and stability in the Middle East and Africa, describing Egypt’s role as a fundamental pillar of these efforts.
The meeting focused on current regional developments, primarily the Iranian crisis. The talks reflected a convergence of visions between the President and the UN Secretary-General with regard to the gravity of the current state of uncertainty and its negative repercussions on the region and the world. President El-Sisi and Secretary-General Guterres emphasized the priority of supporting efforts aimed at reaching peaceful settlements to the conflicts, in a manner that preserves the sovereignty of states and the resources of their peoples.
In this regard, President El-Sisi reviewed Egypt’s endeavors to restore regional security and stability in coordination with active international and regional parties, underscoring Egypt’s full support for the brotherly Gulf states and its categorical rejection of any infringements upon their sovereignty or security.
President El-Sisi also reiterated the pivotal role of United Nations agencies in providing and delivering humanitarian aid, both in Sudan and the Gaza Strip. For his part, UN Secretary-General Guterres highlighted the significant challenges facing the operations of UN agencies, particularly funding pressures, while noting Egypt’s prominent role in alleviating the human suffering resulting from conflicts and crises, particularly in Sudan and the Gaza Strip.
